A great-looking DTF transfer can still fail before it reaches the printer if the artwork arrives in the wrong format. The best file types for DTF preserve clean edges, transparent backgrounds, correct sizing, and the color detail your design needs. For most apparel decorators, that means choosing a file that is ready to print, not just ready to view on a screen.
When you upload artwork for a gang sheet, the file is part of your production workflow. A clean file reduces proofing questions, prevents unexpected background boxes, and helps keep turnaround moving. The right choice depends on whether your design is raster artwork, vector artwork, a photo, or a mixed graphic with text and effects.
Best file types for DTF printing
For most DTF orders, a high-resolution PNG is the best all-around choice. It supports transparency, handles detailed raster artwork well, and gives the production team a clear representation of the final image. PNG is especially effective for logos, full-color illustrations, photographic elements, and designs with soft shading or distressed textures.
PDF is often the best option when the artwork was built as vector graphics. A properly exported PDF can retain sharp lines and text at virtually any print size, making it a strong format for simple logos, lettering, team names, and bold graphics. It can also contain raster images, so verify that any placed images inside the PDF are high resolution.
SVG and AI files are ideal working formats for vector-based art, but whether they are the right upload format depends on the ordering platform and how the file is processed. If your upload tool accepts them reliably, they can provide excellent scalability for clean vector art. If you are unsure, export a print-ready PDF with fonts outlined and effects expanded.
Other formats can work, but they are usually less efficient. TIFF files can carry high-quality raster data, yet their large file sizes can make uploads slower. PSD files preserve layers for editing, but layered source files are not usually necessary for production unless specifically requested. A flattened PNG or PDF is generally the cleaner handoff.
Why PNG is the standard choice for most transfers
PNG solves the most common DTF file-prep issue: backgrounds. Unlike JPEG files, PNG supports true transparency. That matters when the design has an irregular shape, separate lettering, fine details, or open areas that should show the garment color after pressing.
A transparent background does not mean a white background that looks blank on your monitor. It means the file contains no pixels in the open areas. If you export a white rectangle behind your logo, that rectangle may print. Always inspect the artwork over a dark or colored background before uploading to confirm that transparent areas are actually transparent.
PNG is also a practical choice for gang sheets because it allows you to place multiple finished designs without extra cleanup. Build each design at its intended print size, then upload it to your gang sheet builder. This keeps sizing predictable and reduces the risk of enlarging low-resolution art during layout.
For best results, export PNG artwork at 300 PPI at the final printed dimensions. A 12-inch-wide graphic should be built at 12 inches wide at 300 PPI, not created as a small web image and stretched to 12 inches later. Enlarging a 72 PPI image does not create missing detail. It only enlarges the pixels already there.
When a PDF produces a better DTF result
PDF is the stronger choice when your art is primarily vector. Vector paths are built from mathematical points rather than pixels, so clean lines, logos, and text remain sharp when resized. This is useful for chest logos that may be printed at several sizes, sponsor marks for uniforms, or brand artwork used across multiple garments.
Before exporting a PDF, outline or convert fonts to shapes. This prevents font substitution if the production system does not have your font installed. Also expand strokes and appearance effects when possible. A thin outline or live effect that looks correct in a design program can change unexpectedly if it is interpreted differently during processing.
PDF does not automatically guarantee a good print. If a PDF contains a low-resolution screenshot, a small JPEG, or a blurry raster image, those elements will still print poorly. Think of the PDF as the container. The quality of the artwork inside still controls the final result.
File types to avoid for finished DTF artwork
JPEG is the most common file type to avoid for DTF transfers, especially for logos and graphics that need transparent edges. JPEG does not support transparency, so it typically includes a solid background. It also uses compression that can create artifacts around text, fine lines, gradients, and high-contrast edges.
A JPEG may be acceptable for a full-rectangle photo print where the background is intended to print. Even then, send the highest-quality original available rather than a compressed image copied from social media, a website, or a text message.
Screenshots, web graphics, and images pulled from online product listings are also frequent problem files. They may look acceptable on a phone but often lack the pixel dimensions needed for garment printing. A useful rule is simple: if the image was made for a small screen, do not assume it is ready for a 10- to 14-inch transfer.
Avoid sending a design as a Word document, presentation slide, or spreadsheet export. Those formats are built for office viewing, not print production. Export the artwork from your design program as a transparent PNG or print-ready PDF instead.
Resolution, size, and transparency matter as much as format
File type is only one part of print readiness. Resolution and final size determine whether fine details stay clean on the film. For raster art, 300 PPI at final size is the dependable target. If you need a 4-inch left-chest logo, build it as a 4-inch design. If you need a 12-inch full-front print, build it as a 12-inch design.
Do not judge resolution solely by a file's megabyte size. A large file can still be low resolution if it contains oversized blank areas or unnecessary layers. Check pixel dimensions. At 300 PPI, a 12-inch-wide design should be about 3,600 pixels wide.
Transparency also deserves a final check. Remove hidden backgrounds, accidental white boxes, and stray pixels around the design. For soft glow effects, faded edges, or semi-transparent shadows, view the artwork on more than one background color. These effects can be intentional, but they should be intentional before they reach production.
Color setup for dependable results
DTF printing is designed to produce vivid, full-color artwork, but screen color and printed color are not identical systems. Monitors emit light, while transfers use inks on film and are applied to fabric. Bright neon-like screen colors, extremely saturated blues, and subtle tonal shifts may reproduce differently depending on the artwork, garment color, and print process.
For most customer-supplied designs, exporting in RGB is a practical choice because it preserves a broad color range and lets the print workflow manage conversion. If you work from defined brand colors, include the correct color references in your production notes and use a consistent source file. Do not convert the same logo repeatedly through different apps, since each conversion can shift the color values.

Preparing files for a rolling gang sheet
A rolling gang sheet gives you flexibility, but it also makes organization important. Arrange artwork at actual print size and leave enough spacing between designs for clean cutting. Keep identical designs together when possible, and use consistent sizing for recurring items such as left-chest logos, sleeve prints, and neck labels.
If you are placing designs yourself, do not mirror the artwork unless your order instructions specifically require it. DTF transfers are typically supplied so the design reads correctly when viewed on the film. Mirroring a standard graphic can result in backward text after application.
Check the full sheet before checkout. Look for clipped edges, designs placed too close to the film boundary, unintended overlaps, and small graphics that were scaled beyond their usable resolution. That last review takes a few minutes and can prevent a costly reprint.
A practical file-prep checklist
Before uploading, confirm four things: your file is a transparent PNG or print-ready PDF; raster artwork is 300 PPI at final size; text is sharp and readable; and no unwanted background or edge pixels remain. If the artwork includes vector text or logos, a PDF with outlined fonts is often the safest choice.
For photos and complex illustrations, use the highest-resolution PNG available. For simple logos and type-heavy designs, use vector-based PDF when supported. The goal is not to use the most complicated file format. It is to send the format that preserves the artwork exactly as it should print.
Your transfer supplier should make ordering easier, not turn every gang sheet into a file-repair project. Start with production-ready art, build at final size, and choose PNG or PDF based on the design itself.
