For a busy decorator, clean artwork is production control. It protects your turnaround time, keeps gang sheets efficient, and gives customers a more consistent finished product. Use this checklist before uploading your next DTF file.
Top Artwork Mistakes for DTF That Create Reprints
1. Sending low-resolution raster artwork
A PNG may look sharp when it is small on screen, then break down the moment it is printed at chest-logo or full-front size. Low-resolution files commonly produce soft edges, pixel stair-stepping, and rough gradients. Increasing the file size inside a design program does not create missing image data. It only spreads the existing pixels over a larger area.
Build raster art at its intended print size and at a production-ready resolution. For most DTF work, 300 DPI at final dimensions is a reliable target. If a customer provides a small web image, logo screenshot, or social media download, ask for the original artwork, a vector file, or a higher-resolution export before putting it on a gang sheet.
Vector artwork is often the better choice for logos, type, line art, and simple spot-color graphics because it can scale without losing edge quality. That said, a vector file with poorly traced shapes, unnecessary points, or embedded low-resolution images still needs cleanup.
2. Using a background instead of true transparency
DTF artwork should generally have a transparent background wherever no ink is intended. A white or colored rectangle behind the design may become a visible printed box. Even a background that appears white on screen can cause trouble if it is included as actual pixel data rather than transparency.
Check the transparency grid in your design software before export. Remove hidden background layers, masks, and flattened white fields that are not part of the intended print. This matters even more when the artwork includes soft drop shadows, smoke effects, distressed texture, or light-colored lettering.
Be careful with designs made for websites. Many web graphics are exported against a white canvas and are not ready for garment decoration. A clean transparent PNG is usually the practical choice for raster DTF art, while properly prepared vector files can be useful when accepted by your production workflow.
3. Leaving stray pixels and unwanted halos
A one-pixel outline, faint box, or leftover background color can be easy to miss at 100 percent zoom. Once printed, that artifact may appear as a light halo around the design or as random dots on the garment. These issues often come from automatic background removal, poor knockouts, or anti-aliased edges from a previous colored background.
Zoom in closely around the outer edge of the design. Look for stray marks, accidental strokes, and semi-transparent pixels that do not support the visual effect. If you remove a background from a photo, inspect hair, fur, distressed edges, and small cutouts rather than relying entirely on one-click removal.
A deliberate glow or shadow is different. Those effects can print well when they are part of the design and have enough density to reproduce. The key is making sure every pixel on the file is intentional.
4. Making fine lines and tiny type too delicate
Fine detail is where artwork and garment reality meet. A hairline stroke may be visible on a bright monitor but disappear, fill in, or lose definition when transferred to fabric. Tiny text can be especially risky because the adhesive, ink, garment texture, and press pressure all affect how readable it remains.
Avoid treating DTF like paper printing. Give thin lines enough weight, open up small counters inside letters, and test tiny text at actual print size. A detailed illustration can still work, but it may need simplified linework or a larger print area to hold up cleanly.
There is no single safe minimum for every design because it depends on the font, garment, color contrast, and amount of detail. Script fonts, distressed lettering, and artwork with narrow negative spaces need more caution than bold block type. When the detail is central to the sale, press a sample before committing to a larger run.
5. Expecting screen colors to match every garment
Color accuracy begins with the artwork file, but a screen is not a garment. Monitor calibration, fabric color, garment texture, and the opacity of the printed design all influence the final result. A bright blue may appear more intense on white cotton than on a dark heather blend. A subtle tone-on-tone effect may lose separation entirely on the wrong shirt color.
Use clear, consistent color values in the source file instead of relying on a monitor preview alone. Avoid building critical colors from low-opacity layers or multiple effects that are hard to predict after printing. For branded work, keep approved color references with the job and press a proof when the logo color is non-negotiable.

A solid, intentional design will usually produce a more predictable result.
White artwork also deserves a close check. White type on a transparent background is easy to overlook during gang-sheet setup. Add a temporary contrasting background for proofing if needed, then remove it before exporting the final transparent file.
7. Building a gang sheet without spacing or trim awareness
Gang sheets reduce waste and speed up ordering, but crowded layouts create avoidable cutting mistakes. Designs placed too close together are harder to trim cleanly, especially when they have irregular edges, small companion graphics, or separate name and number elements.

Evaluate effects at actual size, not just by how impressive they look while zoomed in. If a gradient carries the whole design, make the transition broad enough to remain visible. 10. Skipping a real-world test for new artwork
The fastest way to learn whether a design works is to press it on the garment it was made to decorate.
